Everything You Need to Know About Preserving Your Wedding Flowers

Flowers are a classic, beautiful form of decoration. You will put a lot of time and effort into making sure you find the perfect florist to execute your vision. Whether you’re a sentimental bride who wants to keep the memory alive or a practical bride who wants to get the most bang for your buck from your floral investment, you should think about preserving your wedding flowers.

Timing

Don’t wait until the week before the wedding – or worse, while you’re at the reception – to make up your mind on whether or not you want to preserve your wedding bouquet and/or other wedding flowers. Decide now so that you can budget money and time to the process and ensure that it’s done properly.

Flower Displays

There are many, many ways to display your wedding flowers. The kinds of displays you like will often determine the type of preservation you can perform. Do you want to frame your flowers and hang them on a wall? Or, do you want them to act as a type of table decoration? If you’re having trouble deciding on a type of display for your wedding flowers, think instead about where you have space to display them.

Planning

Having a plan is perhaps the most important part of wedding flower preservation. If you are going to preserve your flowers but still want to do a bouquet toss, plan on having a separate toss bouquet. If you are leaving for your honeymoon immediately after the wedding or will just be too busy to deal with them, you need to assign the task of obtaining and keeping your wedding flowers to a trusted friend or family member. You need to make sure the flowers make it to them in as good a condition as possible, ASAP.

DIY

If you’re planning on preserving your flowers yourself, there are a few easy ways for you to do so. You can press your flowers by putting them in a sheet of parchment paper and stacking some heavy books on top. In a week or so, you’ll have pressed flowers you can arrange and frame! You can also hang your bouquet upside down in a dry space, like a closet, and come back in a couple of weeks to a completely dried and preserved bunch of blooms. If you’re okay with spending a few bucks to preserve your bouquet, you can also dry the flowers in silica gel, put them in epoxy resin, or dip them in paraffin wax.

Flower Painting

A truly unique way to preserve your wedding bouquet is to have it painted. You can find a local artist to capture your bouquet exactly as it was on your wedding day. This would make a special statement piece for your home, as well as a great conversation-starter.
