Do You Need a Dummy Cake for Your Wedding?

You’re scrolling through Pinterest, looking for ideas for the wedding cake of your dreams, and you’re seeing all these huge, intricate, beautiful wedding cake designs and thinking, “How the heck do they do that?! And afford that?!” The answer is simple – dummy cakes, aka fake cakes. This is very possibly a term that is new to your ears, so let’s take a look at what a dummy cake is and why you need one. 

What Is It?

A dummy cake is a fake cake. It looks like a real cake, but it’s actually just decorated polystyrene blocks. They are used as display cakes for wedding shows and photoshoots. Aka, they’re perfect for your wedding photos. These “cakes” are much easier to transport, they’re a lot easier to make, and generally much more convenient.

2. Easier to transport: Hands down, dummy cakes are way easier to transport than real cakes. This is especially beneficial if your venue is hard to get to or far away from your chosen bakery. Make sure you do not forget to go over transportation with your baker. Delivery is not assumed. You don’t want to have to find a last-minute volunteer to rush over and pick up your cake on your wedding day because you forgot to coordinate with your baker. 
3. Less expensive: Making a real cake that looks exactly how you want can get very expensive, especially depending on the number of guests you’re having (meaning you will need a big enough cake to serve everyone). Solution – get a cheaper dummy cake that’s oh-so-beautiful and serve your guests a delicious sheet cake!
4. More efficient: If you have a dummy cake, you can pre-cut the sheet cake for your guests so that it can be served much faster, instead of having to wait until after the cutting of the cake. (And don’t worry, your baker can instruct you on how to “fake cut” the dummy cake.)
